Did you know that cancer patients react to treatment in multiple ways?

Experts are now convinced that the same medication and treatment processes worked in few patients to completely cure them but they lead to worsening the condition in few other patients.

Blame it on genetic behavior/variation in each patient.

Enter pathology wing – that’s primarily responsible for understanding this behavior of cell - must come forward and take up the challenge, said Dr Dattatreya Nori, while addressing the inaugural of the two day International CME Program in Gynecological Pathology in Hyderabad.

This is the reason why with the increasing importance of cellular, molecular and genetic technology in treating cancer, pathology that understand cells has been gaining importance now-a-days not only in diagnosis of a disease but also in offering treatment.

The CME was organised by Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute (BIACH&RI) in association with International Society of Gynaecological Pathologists (ISGyP), Association of Indian Pathologists in North America (AIPNA) and British Association of Gynaecological Pathology ( BAGP).

Pointing out that the growing importance of pathology wing, it is now a given that it can now effectively deal with cells and tries to understand their behavior after recent advancements of gene therapy, cellular and molecular treatment options. In the past, pathology wing of medicine was earlier limited to diagnosis of the disease only.

Due to this transformation, pathologists must play a pro-active role in deciding treatment options rather just limiting themselves to detecting the same, he urged.

In fact, understanding cellular behavior of each patient and its genetic character in a much better way with the availability of new cellular and molecular technologies to fine tune treatment options further to achieve best results, opined Dr. TS Rao, Medical Director, BIACH&RI.

He also explained that the opinion provided by pathology wing can allow a cancer specialist to understand why there is a failure in particular treatment and what could be the possible best treatment that needs to be given. He hoped that doctors, medical students attending the conference would benefit from mutual exchange of information among them.

In his presidential address, Tollywood actor Nandamuri Balakrishna said that BIACH&RI is giving importance to preventing the disease by conducing medical camps to nib the disease at early stage itself.

The international CME was attended by more than 500 expert pathologists from various parts of nation and world with experts such as Dr Blake Gilks, President, International Society of Gynaecological Pathologists from Canada.
