FSSAI to decode milk safety in India!

News Update:

One generally goes by the brand while procuring milk but nobody knows whether the packet one has got home has cleared all safety parameters.

Every packet of milk has to be within safety standards but Food Safety Officers rarely collect samples.

Have you ever heard of substandard milk packets manufactured by reputed brands like Vijaya Dairy or Heritage?

This may soon become a reality what with Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) conducting a massive pan India milk safety survey with plans to lift 2800 samples to test 13 common parameters including adulterants.

They include the following:

  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Sugar
  • Urea
  • Starch
  • Maltodextrin
  • Boric acid
  • Ammonium Sulfate
  • Nitrates
  • Cellulose
  • Glucose
  • Neutralizer
  • Fat
  • SNF
  • Vegetable (foreign) fat
  • Detergents

Testing Zones:

For effective monitoring of the survey titled National Milk Quality Monitoring Survey, the FSSAI has divided the entire country into 8 clusters-

By the way, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states come under cluster 4.
