Nurturing Mothers, Nourishing Wombs: inter-state consultation on Maternal Nutrition


Maternal undernutrition is a serious issue affecting the under-privileged populations of India, especially those in rural, tribal and urban poor settings. These mothers are at an increased risk of experiencing adverse pregnancy outcomes that impacts their health as well the health of their babies, and contributes to increased infant mortality and morbidity.

An inter-state consultation on Maternal Nutrition – “Nurturing Mothers, Nourishing Wombs” – will be held 5-6 December at Taj Vivanta, Hyderabad. The consultation will discourse on the issue of maternal nutrition, exchange knowledge of good practice/successful models as well as challenges from across the country, and seek solutions to reduce undernutrition among women in India.

The consultation, organized jointly by the Government of Telangana and UNICEF, will see the participation of Government of India and about thirteen Indian states. Dignitaries addressing the technical sessions with include Rakesh Srivastava, Secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Development, GoI; Dr. Dinesh Baswal, Deputy Commissioner - Maternal Health, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GoI; Anamika Singh, Deputy Secretary, NITI Aayog; S P Singh, Chief Secretary, Government of Telangana; M. Jagdeeshwar, Secretary, Department of Women, Children, Disabled and Senior Citizens, Telangana; Dr. T. Longhvah, Director, NIN, Hyderabad; Vani Sethi, Nutrition Specialist, UNICEF India; and government officials and experts from across India.

A report “Nourishing Wombs” will also be released, which is a programmatic evaluation of the Anna Amruta Hastham and Arogya Lakshmi schemes.
